West Sussex County Times

Peaceful, discreet and luxurious, the house was built in 1881 by William Young as a family home in the Scottish baronial style, but now offers country estate refinement to those with a taste for high living at affordable prices.

The Michelin listed, AA Rosette restaurant, which also has 3 RAC Ribbons. "The restaurant is open to guests and non residential customers alike and as you take your seat amid the wood panelled luxury and look out over the terrace to the lush countryside beyond, it is easy to imagine yourself an extra in an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice or similar period drama.
Unfortunately, my dining companion in this instance could hardly be described as an Elizabeth Bennet, but at least the County Times' chief Horsham reporter, Owen Brace, is an enthusiastic fan of gastronomic delights. and we both found ourselves well catered for when we high-tailed it from the office one Friday lunchtime to sample the two course Table D'hote menu for a fixed price of £13.95 the two-course menu offered a choice of Pan Fried Bury Hill River Trout with brown butter, lemon and capers; Medallion of Beef topped with smooth liver pate and a Madeira glaze; Five Spice Honey Roast Barbary Duck Breast with a pink grapefruit dressing or Forest Mushroom Stroganoff with paprika rice. Owen opted for the beef whereas I chose the duck. Both dishes were beautifully presented, rich in flavours and came with a selection of fresh vegetables, including some particularly good roast potatoes. For dessert Owen chose the Double Chocolate Mousse with vanilla cream and Crème Anglaise. It was so artistically presented I thought it seemed a shame to eat it - but Owen had no such qualms.

I opted for a savoury second course in the form of the chef's selection of cheeses which was served with biscuits and some delicious grapes. A pot of coffee and the obligatory after dinner mints concluded an enjoyable trip to the Surrey hills, comprising fine service, delicious food and a wonderful setting. Jamie Bartle PICCAP. In the landscape of the local catering scene, Stanhill Court Hotel stands out as something special and unique.
